Subway tile has become somewhat ubiquitous in 2017 – but why is it so popular with Pittsburgh homeowners? Well, for one thing, classic subway tile (the white ceramic 3 x 6 rectangle) is very versatile and affordable. It works for showers, backsplashes, and other areas while still being cheaper than many other types of tile and natural stone. Plus, it’s easy to clean and it blends with a variety of styles and décor.
But while we love the clean look of white subway tile, our design experts at Floor Coverings International Greater Pittsburgh also encourage you to think outside the box. Subway tile is available in a variety of colors, sizes, and finishes beyond the plain white rectangle. With a little creativity, you can use subway tile to create a unique look that’s all your own! Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Try a fun pattern.
Instead of the usual horizontal brick pattern, install your tile so it creates a special design. You can place it vertically, diagonally, or stacked in a grid. For a trendy look, you could even try placing rectangular tiles in a herringbone pattern.
2. Go beyond white.
For a fun pop of color, try glazed subway tile in red, green, or blue. Or you could try mixing colors in the same color palette – like using several different shades of gray tile.
3. Create stripes and other designs.
If you’ve already decided to use tiles of different colors, why not place them strategically to create a fun design? You could alternate rows or columns of two different colored tiles to create a stripe pattern, for example. Or you could randomly disperse a few colored tiles amidst the usual white ones.
4. Cover a whole wall.
Instead of limiting your subway tile to just a backsplash or shower surround, use it to cover a whole wall! This could mean taking the backsplash tile all the way to the ceiling, or extending your shower tile throughout the rest of the bathroom. Either way, it will create a dramatic effect.
5. Experiment with grout.
You don’t have to stick to white, beige, and gray grout. There are so many other colors to try! For example, you could jazz up plain white subway tile with a bright grout like red or blue.
